What Causes a Circuit Breaker to Keep Tripping?

A breaker that keeps tripping is doing its job — but it's also telling you something's wrong. Here are the most common causes we find in Wanneroo homes.
A tripping breaker is a warning, not a nuisance
Circuit breakers and RCD safety switches trip to protect you. When they trip repeatedly, they're signalling an overload, a fault, or a failing device somewhere on the circuit. Resetting it over and over without investigating the cause is the wrong response — the next trip might be protecting you from a fire.
Overloaded circuits
The most common cause is simply too many appliances drawing power from one circuit at the same time. A kitchen circuit running a kettle, toaster, microwave and dishwasher simultaneously can exceed the circuit's rating. The fix is often redistributing loads across circuits, or adding a dedicated circuit for a high-draw appliance.
This is particularly common in older Wanneroo homes where a single circuit was originally expected to carry far less than a modern kitchen demands.
Faulty appliances
A failing appliance — often a kettle, iron, washing machine or older fridge — can leak current to earth and trip an RCD. The tell-tale sign is that the breaker trips only when a particular appliance is plugged in or switched on. Unplugging appliances one at a time and resetting the breaker each time helps isolate the culprit.
Once identified, the faulty appliance should be replaced or repaired, not kept in use.
Moisture and water ingress
Outdoor power points, garden lighting, and bathroom or laundry circuits are prone to moisture ingress, especially after heavy rain. Water in a fitting or junction causes current to leak to earth and trips the RCD. These faults often appear intermittently, which makes them harder to pin down without proper testing.
Damaged or degraded wiring
In older homes, cable insulation can become brittle and crack, particularly where cables run through roof spaces exposed to high temperatures. Degraded insulation allows current to leak and causes persistent tripping. This is a more serious fault that usually requires section-by-section insulation resistance testing to locate, and often a partial rewire to resolve.
A failing safety switch
Sometimes the RCD or breaker itself has reached the end of its life and trips for no external reason. Safety switches should be tested regularly using the test button, and replaced if they're sticky, slow to trip, or fail the test. When to call a licensed electrician
If a breaker trips once and resets cleanly, it's usually safe to monitor.
