What testing and tagging involves

Testing and tagging is the process of visually inspecting and electrically testing portable appliances and leads to confirm they're safe to use, then tagging each item with the test date, the next-due date and the tester's details. It's governed by Australian Standard AS/NZS 3760, which sets out what must be tested, how, and how often.

A proper test involves two stages. First, a visual inspection of the appliance, the lead and the plug for damage, cracks, exposed wiring or compromised insulation. Second, an electrical test using a portable appliance tester to check insulation resistance, earth continuity and leakage current — the things a visual check alone can't catch.

For Wanneroo businesses, testing and tagging is part of meeting Work Health and Safety obligations. It applies to offices, workshops, retail premises, construction sites, rental properties and anywhere employees or the public use electrical equipment. The test itself covers three electrical properties: insulation resistance (to confirm the insulation is intact), earth continuity (to confirm the earth path is sound on Class I appliances), and leakage current (to confirm no unsafe current is escaping). A calibrated portable appliance tester measures all three.
