What electrical rewiring involves

Electrical rewiring is the process of replacing the fixed cabling that runs through your walls, ceilings and roof space — the hidden backbone of your home's electrical system. Over decades, cable insulation degrades, becomes brittle, and in the oldest homes was made from materials like vulcanised rubber or cotton that are now recognised as serious fire and shock hazards.

A rewire involves pulling out the old cabling and installing modern TPS (tough plastic sheathed) copper cabling throughout, along with new switchboard protection, power points, light fittings and an upgraded earthing system. It can be a full rewire of the entire property or a partial rewire targeting the most degraded circuits.

For older Wanneroo homes, rewiring is often prompted by a safety inspection, a major renovation, a property sale, or visible warning signs like flickering lights and damaged fittings. The goal is always the same: replace hidden, degraded cabling with wiring that's safe, compliant and capable of handling modern household loads.

Safety is the overriding reason. Old rubber and cloth-insulated cables degrade over time — the insulation becomes brittle, cracks, and falls away from the conductor, leaving live copper exposed inside your walls or roof space. That creates a real risk of short circuits, electric shock and electrical fires, and the risk only increases as the cabling ages.

Capacity is the second reason. Wiring installed decades ago was sized for the loads of the time — a few lights, a radio, maybe a fridge. Modern households run air conditioning, induction cooking, EV chargers and dozens of devices. Old wiring often can't safely carry these loads, leading to overheating and nuisance tripping.

Compliance and value complete the case. A home with degraded, non-compliant wiring can hold up a sale, fail an inspection, and in a rental situation breach the owner's obligations. Rewiring brings the property up to current standards, removes the hidden risk, and supports everything you want to add — from a new switchboard to an EV charger.

Cable type is identifiable on inspection. Vulcanised rubber-insulated (VIR) cabling, cloth-wrapped cabling, and cables with black or fabric insulation are all indicators of wiring that's well past its serviceable life and should be assessed for replacement.

A rewire usually includes a switchboard upgrade, because old wiring is typically paired with an old board. Replacing the cabling while leaving an outdated board with ceramic fuses would leave the property under-protected, so we address both together.

The earthing system matters. Older homes often have inadequate or degraded earthing, which affects how quickly protective devices operate. A proper rewire includes upgrading the main earthing conductor and earth stake so fault protection works as it should.
