What RCD safety switches do

A residual current device (RCD), often called a safety switch, is a device that monitors the current flowing through your circuits and disconnects the supply within milliseconds if it detects electricity leaking to earth — the kind of leakage that happens when a person receives an electric shock, or when a faulty appliance or damaged cable is live where it shouldn't be.

Without an RCD, a fault can deliver a lethal shock for long enough to cause serious harm or death. With a correctly functioning RCD, the supply is cut so fast that the shock is brief and, in most cases, survivable. That is why RCDs are treated as an essential safety device, not an optional extra.

Modern switchboards use RCBOs — combined RCD and circuit breaker units — on individual circuits, so a fault on the kitchen power circuit trips only that circuit rather than cutting power to the whole house. The primary reason is protection of life. An RCD is the single most effective device for preventing electric shock fatalities in the home. If current leaks through a person, the RCD disconnects the supply in milliseconds — fast enough that the shock is unlikely to be fatal. No other device on your switchboard does this.

Compliance is the second reason. WA requires RCDs on all light and power circuits in residential properties, and they are mandatory for rental properties and at point of sale. A property without compliant RCDs can hold up a settlement or breach a landlord's obligations.

RCDs also provide a degree of fire protection by disconnecting supply when current leaks through degraded insulation, which is a common precursor to electrical fires in older wiring. Testing them regularly confirms they'll actually trip when needed — an RCD that doesn't operate is worse than no protection, because it creates false confidence.

RCD trip time is the key metric. A compliant RCD must disconnect within a specified number of milliseconds at the rated residual current. We measure this with calibrated test equipment rather than relying on the push-button test, which only confirms the mechanism moves — not that it trips fast enough to protect a person.

Nuisance tripping has a cause, and it's usually findable. Common culprits include faulty kettles and toasters, water in outdoor power points, degraded cable insulation, or an RCD that's reached the end of its serviceable life. We isolate the cause rather than just resetting and hoping.

RCDs have a finite lifespan — typically around 10 to 15 years depending on the device and conditions. Older units can become sticky or slow. If your RCDs are original to an older board, testing will tell us whether replacement is due.
