Signs Your Switchboard Needs Upgrading

Older Wanneroo homes still running ceramic fuses or undersized boards are a hidden fire risk. Here are the warning signs we look for during a switchboard inspection.
Why the switchboard matters
Your switchboard is the control centre of your home's electrical system. It distributes power to every circuit and, when fitted with modern safety switches, disconnects the supply in milliseconds if a fault occurs. Many homes built across Wanneroo and Perth's northern suburbs through the 1980s and 1990s still rely on switchboards that were never designed for the loads a modern household places on them.
Upgrading a switchboard isn't about cosmetics. It's about bringing the protective devices on your board up to current Australian Standards so that a faulty appliance or damaged cable trips a safety switch instead of starting a fire.
Ceramic fuses are the clearest warning sign
If you open your switchboard and see porcelain or ceramic fuse holders with re-wireable fuse wire, the board is well past its serviceable life. Re-wireable fuses offer no residual current device (RCD) protection at all — they only protect the cable from overload, not you or your family from electric shock.
These fuses are also easily overloaded when a homeowner fits heavier gauge wire to stop them blowing, which defeats the protection entirely and is a common cause of cable damage and fires in older properties.
Frequent tripping and flickering lights
A board that trips repeatedly when you run several appliances at once, or lights that dim when an air conditioner or kettle kicks in, usually points to a board that lacks capacity or has degraded protective devices. Rather than resetting and ignoring it, treat repeated tripping as the board telling you something is wrong.
Modern RCBOs (combined RCD and circuit breaker) isolate only the faulty circuit, so a fault on the kitchen power circuit no longer plunges the whole house into darkness.
Burning smell, discolouration or warmth
Any smell of burning plastic, discoloured or melted fuse holders, or a board that feels warm to the touch is an urgent safety issue. Turn the main switch off and call a licensed electrician immediately — do not keep using the circuit.
Planning to add solar, an EV charger or a renovation
Even a board that functions fine day-to-day often needs upgrading before you add a high-load item like an EV charger, a solar inverter, a large air conditioner, or a kitchen renovation with an induction cooktop. These additions require dedicated circuits and correctly sized main switches that an older board simply doesn't have space for.
